A Sweet Stockpile

I have a number of finished and unfinished paintings lying around my apartment. I love to hide work until an opportunity pops up where I’m able to show good, finished work properly. There’s nothing nice about a rushed project or unrefined work due to deadlines!

This is a painting I’ve had in my room for months! It took me over 6 months to complete it. It’s a juxtuposition of natural and man-made sweets. What are the contrasts and comparisons between the two subjects and the ways that they are produced? God made the strawberry beautiful and delicious, and it was good. Man processes sugar, derives dyes, and packages it in colorful wrapping to imitate the strawberry to make a buck. No harm done by candy companies(except for cavities maybe), but the analogy is that while many things are replicated by eager men, original beauty and taste can not be duplicated.

Shark Attack

I enjoy working with vinyl toys to potray personas that symbolize various personalities and additudes. When I start a new project, I shop specifically for a figure that lends itself to a goal I’m aiming for. These sharks were once black, and I really liked the wide open mouths and jagged teeth. I thought about the brightly-colored, venomous frogs and flowers of tropical forests and exotic habitats. Their unique, natural defense mechanisms have been intersesting to me since I was a kid.

I always scrubbed the toy with acetone to remove all of the paint. I took off the teeth and toungues to clean every crevice. Then I painted the parts with acryilc paint using a brush.

Pop Art?

When I tell people that I paint, I am often asked what type of work I do. It’s hard for me to reply with a quick and simple answer. I like to work with different types of media and materials because I enjoy starting off with a new approach to every project. I’ll paint for a few weeks, design graphic work the next week, and build something the following. This makes the description of my work difficult to narrow down.

Although my work varies in mediums, the concepts are always somewhat related. I draw a lot from my childhood and from my adventurous teen years. There was no fine line between play and mischief, or desire and greed. Everything seemlessly transformed into the world I now live in. I paint and illistrate objects that capture a stage of that transformation.

I still have artwork on display at FM Station! Stop by to check it out before it comes down.

A few shirts are also still available for $26. I’d like to focus on one of a kind pieces and don’t plan on making a new CM tee in the near future. So pick yours up because once they’re out there won’t be any more!

Toys!

Toy 1ToysUNDFTD Toy

One of my favorite things to do is to take a trip to the toystore! Lulubell Toy Bodega, on 6th and 6th, is the number one spot for urban vinyl and awesome art books and magazines. An ideal Saturday for me consists of a new shirt in the mail(preferably Benny Gold), pancakes, and a trip to Lulubell! I’ve collected a few Dunnies and customized a number of toys and I can’t get enough of them;  I really can’t afford them! My dream figure would be a Kaws 4′ Companion. These are a few of my favorites from my collection.

On Point

On Point1Friendly Conversation

This is what my energy’s been going into lately. I constantly try to keep my mind running and producing new creative ideas. As I work on establishing my foundation as an artist, I have to stop and look at where I’ve brought myself. I’m happy with what I’m doing, but more excited about where I’m going.

My goal has been to create a concept of  liveliness that is mainly inspired by adolescent and childhood playfulness and memories. I feel good about the outcome of the work overall. The shirt, On Point, is how I feel about my progress and about the way I work. I plan to approach every project with the idea that I will create with a concept and work meticulously to execute it.

I keep most of my ideas written down. I like to imagine tomorrow and think about what innovative idea I can come up with that will change the world or, at the very least, affect a person’s thoughts or mood. I carry my sketchbook with me at all times!

I am again in the process of prioritizing my list of projects, some small and some large. Weighing out possibilities and questioning what will be my next venture.
